Tariffs on all Canadian cars, trucks, automotive parts and steel will rise to 50 percent on 1 January 2027, an escalation announced Monday after trade negotiations between Washington and Ottawa collapsed late Friday. The increase stacks on top of a separate 50 percent levy already applied to a range of other Canadian goods, from hockey sticks to tongue depressors, the Guardian reported. Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was "reluctantly" announcing retaliatory tariffs and accused the United States of starting a trade war.

Donald Trump set out the schedule in a social media post and said the United States does not "need" Canada, France 24 reported. The measure lands on an auto sector whose supply chains run back and forth across the border many times before a finished vehicle is sold.
How is Canada responding?
Ottawa has said it will impose retaliatory tariffs. Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who said Ronald Reagan would be "throwing up" over the measures, told PBS NewsHour that "everything is on the table" following Carney's walkout. One Canadian politician has gone further and threatened to cut off electricity and mineral supplies to the United States, Sky News reported.
What has the president said?
"Canada has been ripping off the United States of America for years," Trump posted on Monday morning. He has also accused Canada of wanting "the benefits of being a State, without being one," a line he first used on Sunday as retaliation was being prepared.
How is Washington reacting?
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Carney would "come to the table" because the tariffs would be "devastating" for Canada. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said Trump "is destroying the relationship with one of our country's strongest allies," The Hill reported. Senator Susan Collins has asked the White House to weigh the "negative impact" of the dispute.
