Xi Jinping is expected to attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi on 12 and 13 September, leading a delegation of roughly 400 people. The trip would be his first visit to India in seven years, Reuters reported, citing three Indian sources. One of those sources said Chinese officials are working to finalise hotel and security arrangements.
Xi last travelled to India in 2019, accompanied by fewer than 200 officials. A deadly border clash between the two countries followed the next year, and relations have recovered only partially since. He did not attend last year's BRICS summit in Brazil, which makes the New Delhi appearance the more closely watched of the two.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his own first trip to China in seven years last year, though bilateral ties have improved slowly since. This month the two governments exchanged sharp diplomatic language over a dispute in the Indian border state of Arunachal Pradesh. Officials on both sides are likely to use the summit to test how they might manage their long-running differences over the border and regional security while widening other exchanges, the sources said.
Should Xi travel, attention is expected to settle less on the BRICS agenda itself than on what the visit signals for the effort to stabilise China-India relations after the 2020 clash, Reuters reported. The delegation described to the wire is roughly double the size of the one that accompanied him in 2019. Neither government has announced the trip, and the account rests on unnamed Indian officials rather than a published itinerary, leaving the visit unscheduled in any official record so far.
